Roberts visited the town of Rachel over the weekend and told FOX5 at the time that the Facebook event he created never was expected to snowball into something this big. At the time, he said he was still looking to be involved in the Alienstock event. “I’ve never been more stressed in my life, but I’ve also never been this happy,” he told FOX5 on Sunday. “It’s insane, …

Trump Under Pressure To Lay Out Path Forward On Gun Legislation

gun violence. What they require to move forward is guidance from President gun control. Republican congressional leadership from both chambers: House Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and Majority Whip John Thune (S.D.). The president and the top GOP leaders are expected to discuss the matter during the meeting at the White House.  “At this point, I think the president probably needs to make a decision,” Murphy told reporters on Monday, adding that Democrats had put some “creative ideas on the table.” “As each day goes by, it seems more likely that we’re going to find ourselves back in a familiar place, where 90% of the Americans who want more background checks are going to be disappointed once again,” Murphy said. …

World’s Largest Telescope Spots More Than 100 Fast Radio Bursts

China’s humongous radio telescope has reaped an impressive harvest of special signals from a galaxy 3 billion light-years away. The signals, known as fast radio bursts (FRBs), are extremely short but very powerful emissions of radio waves. Even though we’re still not sure what FRBs actually are, or where they come from, these particular signals were traced to emitter FRB 121102, one of the few FRBs that have been caught repeating. The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) has been scanning the patch of sky where FRB 121102 originates and was able to detect more than 100 signals between August 30 and the first few days of September. This is the highest number of bursts detected so far for this source, …

Hong Kong is having a leadership crisis

(CNN)The late Chinese Communist leader, Deng Xiaoping, promised comrades and patriots that even after the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to China, “horses will still run, stocks will still sizzle and dancers will still dance” in the free-wheeling territory. Hong Kong needs to be saved, and, while the glide path out of the crisis is uncertain, there are immediate steps — beyond the withdrawal of the extradition bill — that can be taken to cool down the protesters to the point that they will leave the streets. As the city’s South China Morning Post wrote last week in an editorial, withdrawal of the extradition bill “is only (the) first step on road to reconciliation in Hong Kong.” That sentiment was …

Antonio Brown signs with Patriots hours after being released by the Raiders

(CNN)Antonio Brown’s time as an NFL free agent didn’t last long. His one-year deal with New England is worth $15 million and includes a $9 million signing bonus, the NFL said, citing NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network’s MJ Acosta. Brown can’t play in the Patriots’ season opener against the Steelers Sunday night, but he’ll be eligible when team faces the Dolphins in week two, the NFL said. Brown’s sudden move from the West Coast to the East Coast comes after he asked the Raiders to release him from his contract a day after apologizing at a team meeting for getting into a nonphysical altercation Wednesday with Raiders general manager Mike Mayock. Following Friday’s team practice, Raiders head …

Saudi Arabia fires its oil minister for the second time in 3 years

London (CNN Business)Saudi Arabia has a new oil minister. Prince Abdulaziz is Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s half brother and has been a member of Saudi Arabia’s delegation to OPEC for many years. He becomes the first member of the royal family to serve as oil minister. His appointment breaks with long standing tradition and follows the removal of al-Falih as chairman of the giant state-owned oil company Saudi Aramco just last week. The leadership changes are the latest in a string of developments to prepare Aramco to go public in what could be the world’s biggest IPO. Aramco attracted huge interest with its debut international bond sale in April. It has conducted an independent audit of the kingdom’s oil …

After nearly 17 years, ‘Bad Boys II’ is getting a sequel. That wait is nothing compared to these movie sequels

(CNN)After nearly 17 years, we’re finally getting a sequel to “Bad Boys II” called “Bad Boys for Life.” Seventeen years may be an excruciatingly long wait for a movie sequel, but it doesn’t crack the top 20 for the longest gaps between movies. TRON (1982) – TRON: Legacy (2010) Gap: 28 years The original “TRON” is a cult classic that only seems to have grown in popularity since it first came out. Disney finally released a sequel to the film called “TRON: Legacy” hoping to capitalize on its cult following, but it never really hit its mark. Even bringing back Jeff Bridges couldn’t save the film despite it’s gorgeous visuals. There have been rumors of a follow up to “TRON: …

Coloradans push Gardner on gun control ahead of marquee Senate race

Aurora, Colorado (CNN)Coni Sanders, the daughter of a teacher who was killed in the Columbine High School shooting, has a message for Colorado Republican Sen. Cory Gardner. “We have to prevent violence and we should protect our communities, but we can’t violate the Constitution,” Gardner said during a May radio interview when asked about red flag laws. The senator has also raised questions about whether red flag legislation in Colorado is constitutional. “I think you could possibly craft a bill to protect the Constitution,” Gardner said during the same interview in response to another question about red flag laws, adding, “I don’t know that you could construct it as they wrote it in 2018 or 2019,” a reference to state …

Rafael Nadal wins 4th US Open title, defeating Daniil Medvedev

(AP Photo/Eduardo Munoz Alvarez) Even at the very end — or when everyone, save Medvedev, perhaps, figured it was the very end — Nadal had trouble closing things out. After breaking to lead 3-2 in the fifth, in a game Medvedev led 40-love, Nadal broke again and served for the championship at 5-2. The way this back-and-forth tale was spun, though, it probably was inevitable that Medvedev would break there. And so he did, because Nadal double-faulted on break point after he was docked a serve for his third time violation of the evening. In the next game, Nadal held …

BA strike: Why are pilots walking out?

The British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa) said the strikes were a “last resort” born out of “enormous frustration” with airline management. Pilots have rejected a pay increase worth 11.5% over three years, which the airline proposed in July. Balpa says that its members have taken lower pay rises and made sacrifices during the tougher times and now that BA’s financial performance has improved – its parent company IAG reported a 9% rise in profits last year – they should see a greater share of the profits. No 10 tells BA and pilots to ‘sort out’ strike Ryanair pilots vote for further strikes Passengers angry at BA ‘silence’ amid strike chaos BA says its pilots already receive “world-class” salaries, that pay …

Trump Shows A Fake Hurricane Map Altered With A Sharpie, Inspires 30 Hilarious Memes

The President of the United States Donald Trump is making headlines once again. The newest ‘scandal’ to rock the Presidency has everything to do with the idea that just because you draw on something with a marker pen, it doesn’t change reality. The only ones with the power to turn ink into reality are writers and artists, and Trump is neither. When the President showed off a predictive National Hurricane Center map, it looked like it was drawn on with a Sharpie in one place. Trump insisted that hurricane Dorian had a “95% chance” of hitting Alabama, even though the National Weather Service denied it. And, boy, did the internet love where this was going. The memes started coming in …

Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionArmando Iannucci and Dev Patel at the Toronto screening of David Copperfield A new adaptation of David Copperfield is the latest project to take a colour-blind approach to casting. Dev Patel plays the titular character in The Personal History of David Copperfield, which is directed by Armando Iannucci. Speaking to BBC News at the film’s Toronto premiere, Iannucci said the casting process felt “very natural.” “When I wanted to make David Copperfield, I instantly thought of Dev,” he explained. “And I also wanted it to feel contemporary, although it’s set in 1840. For the characters in it, it’s the present day, so it should feel like the present day, and feel reflective …

NASA Snaps Bright Flash Of X-Rays But Its Source Remains A Mystery

NASA’s telescope NuSTAR is designed to spot energetic X-ray lights coming from the cosmos. These signals often come from supernovae and supermassive black holes but a team of researchers has recently found one without a straightforward explanation. When looking at the Fireworks galaxy (also known as NGC 6946), they discovered a transient event that appeared and disappeared over less than three weeks. The green blob in the main image wasn’t there in the first set of observations; it suddenly appeared in the second set, which was conducted 10 days later. When the researchers checked again after another 10 days, the signal had gone for good. The observations are reported in The Astrophysical Journal and were part of a wider investigation of NGC …
