Trump’s argument to block McGahn from testifying is nuts

(CNN)On Monday, President Donald Trump launched a long-shot effort to prevent the public from hearing live testimony from former White House Counsel Don McGahn — the man who, perhaps more than any other, can bring to life Trump’s most flagrant alleged acts of obstruction of justice. This is the textbook definition of obstruction of justice, and McGahn’s testimony threatens to expose this to millions of Americans across the country who haven’t read the Mueller report.

Justin Amash’s impeachment call puts the Constitution ahead of Trump

(CNN)Finally, a deeply conservative member of Congress, Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, has put the US Constitution before partisan loyalty to President Donald Trump. The question is — will this inspire other Republicans to do the same, or will they continue to defend Trump against any claims of wrongdoing arising from Robert Mueller’s investigation? If social media is any indication, it’s likely they will do the latter — at least for now. Cupp reacts to Amash tweet: This is big Amash is right. You don’t need to have a Ph.D. in political science to understand that if elected officials blindly defend the actions of a president simply because they are in the same political party, it’s a prescription for disaster …

The story of rhino poaching, elephant trampling and man-eating lions is even more complicated

(CNN)Lions eat people. In fact, they eat them all the time. And although the news last week focused on a suspected rhino poacher who was eaten by lions after being trampled by elephants, the story may tell us more about the hazards of poverty than about nature taking vengeance against the sins of mankind. To protect their crops, subsistence farmers had to sleep in their fields at harvest time. Lions followed the pigs to the fields, and some learned to add sleeping farmers to their diet. A similarly desperate situation has persisted for many years in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, which is located along the border with the much poorer nation of Mozambique. Impoverished Mozambicans seeking employment in South …

Trump’s ‘opposite-day’ move on foreign aid

(CNN)Every week, I offer a glimpse of the kind of intelligence assessments that are likely to come across the desk of the President of the United States, modeled on the President’s Daily Briefing, or PDB, which the director of national intelligence prepares for the President almost daily. President Trump’s threats to close our border and his order to cut US assistance to Central American countries — a pledge he has made before but hasn’t followed through on — will undoubtedly create a perfect storm of increased migration flows at our southern border, strained relationships with key partners, and new economic risks for everyday Americans. His actions are also likely perceived globally as a signal that he doesn’t care what his …

Nancy Pelosi’s impeachment remarks were laughable

(CNN)House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s laughable announcement this week that she lacked enthusiasm for impeaching President Donald Trump ignored three things: the wishes of several vocal members in her conference, the bloodthirstiness of her party’s base and the credibility of Adam Schiff. Her political instinct is correct — impeaching a president is divisive and could backfire, as it did on Republicans after the 1998 impeachment of President Bill Clinton. Pelosi’s conference defies her all the time. True to form, the goat rodeo continued this week as several broke with her on impeachment. Impeachment is “not a matter of whether, it’s a matter of when,” Rep. John Yarmuth, chairman of the Budget Committee, said. “That doesn’t mean we’re voting on it,” said …

You kept sending Amazon stories. We couldn’t stop reading them

(CNN)What will they do in place of Amazon? That’s just a taste of what a few CNN Opinion readers had to say about the Amazon’s February 14 announcement that Long Island City would no longer be one of the two sites for its HQ2 hubs on the East Coast. From now on, no one will confuse the Queens neighborhood with Jeff Bezos’ Valentine. The LIC plan offer had been controversial since it was announced four months ago, with proponents and opposition activists alike raising their voices. Likewise, after Amazon withdrew the offer; reactions were swift, furious and remarkably lacking in consensus CNN Opinion published an op-ed by CNN anchor John Avlon on Feb. 15 that took issue with Amazon’s cushy …

Howard Schultz: Americans need more opportunities

(CNN)It is difficult to find Americans who believe the government is working for them. Luckily, I inherited my mother’s optimism that I could make a better life for myself. I also grew up at a time when access to education and a first job helped me earn success. After I became the first in my family to go to college, I got a job in sales, where I learned what it means to be accountable. Since then, and throughout my career, I have worked with teams of talented people to address many of our country’s challenges by making opportunities like access to health care, jobs, and education available to more people. Over its history, Starbucks has employed some 3 million …
